Observation Narrative
This plot is a composite of four contiguous 100 square meter circular plots.
Plot location: Swamp forest ca. 80 meters east of Indian Creek, just north of its confluence with the Northwest River.
Hummocks around tree bases - 27-40cm above litter/water level.
Mapped as MH- mixed alluvial land, but soil cores indicate equivalency to Pocaty Peat or Dorovan Mucky Peat.
A narrow strip of mucky swamp forest between uplands and a small marsh embayment. A very dense shrub layer and high diversity of woody species occurs under a mixed canopy of Nyssa biflora, Taxodium distichum, and Pinus taeda.
NOTE: A transect of 11 contigous, 11.28m diamter, 100sq meter circular plots was established in this locality, running from an upland edge across the marsh and swamp forests on either side to the channel of Indian Creek. This plot representsa composite of the four contiguous swamp forest plots north of the marsh. Cover values for individual species were converted to numerical values using the mid-points of cover class ranges, and these were summed, averaged over the four plots, and reconverted to cover class ranges. This method was employed to provide consistency with standard forest plot size (400 sq meter) in the data set.
